Visa Information

The Embassy of Georgia in the Republic of South Africa would like to inform that the new visa policy entered in force in Georgia from 5 June 2015. According to the new policy, the citizens of the Republic of South AfricaRepublic of Botswana and the Republic of Mauritius enjoy a visa-free regime for travelling and / or staying in Georgia for the period of one full year.

Nevertheless, the citizens of the Republic of South Africa, Republic of Botswana and the Republic of Mauritius should apply for the respective immigration category visa if they intend to stay in Georgia for longer than one year or to apply for the Temporary Residence Permit.

Foreign employees of the Diplomatic missions, Consular Offices, representation offices of international organizations, and other equivalent representations. They still need a visa for their first entry in Georgia for the purpose of work, unless otherwise provided by the international agreement of Georgia.

The holders of the United Nations Organization's or its specialized agencies travel documents (Laissez-Passer), can enter or stay on the territory of Georgia without visa for one full year.

The Government of Georgia has approved the list of countries which citizens may enter and stay in Georgia without visa for one full year, as well as the list of countries whose visa and/or Residence Permit Holders may enter Georgia without a visa for 90 calendar days in any 180-day period (please see the relevant lists bellow).

According to the new regulations, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia has launched e-Visa (www.evisa.gov.ge) portal allowing short-term visitors to get a visa in effortless way. Prospective travelers have a possibility to obtain the short-term

Purpose of visit:

-          Tourism;

-          Business/Professional;

-          Visiting friends and relatives;

-          Education and training;

-          Health and medication;

-          Religion/Pilgrimage.

visa without visiting Georgian Embassy or Consular Office, following three simple steps: applying, making online payment and printing out ready e-Visa. Applying for a visa through this portal has lots of advantages. No need to make an appointment or present original documents to the Embassy or Consular Office. An e-Visa can be obtained easily anywhere with an internet connection and it grants the same right to enter Georgian territory as ordinary sticker-visa in the passport. All you need is internet connection, credit or debit card and scanned copies of your documents. You must be able to present all the required documents at Georgian state border.

Foreigners with short-term visa may stay in Georgia for up to 90 days in any 180-day period or 30 days in any 120-day period according to their presented papers.

Foreigners who have a 90 day visa and are staying in Georgia for 45 days or more can apply for a long term visa in Georgia without leaving the country. A long-term visa is issued for duration of 90 days and is the precondition of obtaining relevant residence permit. For long-term visits foreign citizens are required to obtain a visa regardless the nationality.

Visa application should be filled-in only on-line (https://www.geoconsul.gov.ge/en/aboutUs) by a foreign applicant or by his/her legal representative. The application should be filled with all the necessary documents attached with it before scheduling a visit with the consular.

Submitting e-application is necessary for scheduling a visit to consular office (https://www.geoconsul.gov.ge/en/register/visit).

Fully filled-in visa application should be printed out, signed and personally submitted to the Embassy of Georgia in Pretoria.

General Rules:

A decision regarding the issuance of a short-term Georgian visa will be made during 10 calendar days, from the personal submission of a visa application and of other documents necessary for issuing a visa.

If necessary the examination of the visa application may be extended by 30 calendar days or in urgent cases may be reduced till 2 working days or a shorter period.

The decision on issuing a long-term visa will be made within 30 calendar days from the receipt of a visa application and other documents necessary for issuing that visa.

Refusal to Georgian visa will be given to applicant in a written form. The consular fee paid for obtaining Georgian visa shall not be refunded. The decision of not issuing visa may be appealed to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia (Address: Georgia, Tbilisi, 4 Sh. Chitadze, Zip Code: 0114) within 1 (one) month after submitting the decision to the relevant interested party.

General requirements to the documents to be submitted:

Documents necessary for obtaining visa must be submitted in the official language of Georgia or in English. In reviewing the application for a short-term visa, a visa issuing authority may accept and review documents made in a foreign language.

If a document is translated, the document must be submitted along with translation certified under legislation.

Documents that are necessary for obtaining visa but have been issued in another state, must be submitted after they have been duly legalised or apostillised in original form. It is also possible to present the legalized or apostillised copy of the document if the original was respectively legalized or apostillised as well.

The document need not be legalised or apostillised if it is submitted for obtaining the Diplomatic or Special visas.

In reviewing the application for a short-term visa, a diplomatic mission or consular office may accept and review documents made in a foreign language.

The documents issued by the following stated does not need to be legalised or apostillised while applying for any type of visa: Republic of Belarus, Ukraine, Republic of Moldova, Republic of Armenia, Republic of Kazakhstan, Republic of Azerbaijan, Republic of Tajikistan, Kyrgyz Republic, Republic of Turkmenistan and Russian Federation.

 

 

 

VISA CATEGORIES

Diplomatic

"A" Category

A1 - to top officials of foreign legislative and executive authorities, members of top- and high-level delegations, and their accompanying family members arriving in Georgia on state, official, business, friendly or unofficial visits. Individuals holding an A1 visa shall enjoy diplomatic immunity in Georgia throughout the period of the visa validity;

A2 - to employees of diplomatic and equivalent missions accredited to Georgia, as well as to consular officials and their family members; to employees of representation offices of international organisations located in Georgia, who have been granted diplomatic status by Georgia, and to their family members (Long-Term Visas are required);

A3 - to diplomatic couriers and individuals arriving in Georgia on a special diplomatic mission;

A4 - to honorary consuls of Georgia, if they are citizens of a foreign country;

A5 - in the national interests of Georgia, to individuals holding a business/official or ordinary passport and entering Georgia on various missions

Special

"B" Category

B1 - to members of foreign delegations, their accompanying family members and other accompanying persons;

B2 - to administrative, technical and service personnel of foreign diplomatic missions, consular employees and service staff of consular offices, also to their family members and household servants; to employees of representative offices of international and humanitarian organisations located in Georgia and their family members who reside with them (Long-Term Visas are required);

B3 - to individuals arriving in Georgia under international bilateral and multilateral treaties of Georgia; members of peacekeeping forces and other military contingents deployed in Georgia under an international agreement of Georgia (Long-Term Visas are required);

B4 - in the national interests of Georgia, to individuals holding a business/official or ordinary passport and entering Georgia on various missions

Ordinary

"C" Category

Short-Term Visas

C1 - to individuals arriving in Georgia for tourism purposes;

C2 - to individuals arriving in Georgia to visit relatives and friends, and to freelancers;

C3 - to individuals arriving in Georgia to hold business meetings and negotiations; participants of scientific workshops, conferences or other research, pedagogical, cultural or sports events; persons arriving in Georgia to engage in journalistic activity; crew members of the ships standing in Georgian harbours, unless visa-free movement of the crew members is provided for by an international treaty of Georgia;

C4 - to individuals arriving in Georgia to provide humanitarian assistance during life-threatening situations and situations hazardous to health, to carry out charity activities; a guardian or custodian of a Georgian citizen; individuals under guardianship or custody of a Georgian citizen; individuals arriving in Georgia for treatment; individuals visiting graves of relatives and friends; individuals arriving with the purpose of pilgrimage and establishing religious contacts; individuals arriving on scientific, sports, cultural or educational mission

Immigration 

"D" Category

Long-Term

Visas

D1 - to individuals arriving in Georgia to work; representatives and consultants of companies and firms who travel to Georgia to perform their official duties; mass media workers visiting Georgia to perform their official duties; aliens entering Georgia to work under signed contracts;

D2 - to individuals arriving in Georgia to carry out entrepreneurial activity under the Law of Georgia on Entrepreneurs;

D3 - to individuals arriving in Georgia to study at authorised educational institutions in Georgia;

D4 - to individuals to individuals arriving in Georgia for family reunification

Transit

"T" Category 

for transiting the territory of Georgia (five days) in order to enter a third country

            PLESE NOTE, ALL RELEVANT DOCUMENTS SHOULD BE UPLOADED IN THE E-APPLICATION SYSTEM.

 

Requirements for the SHORT-TERM VISAS

(https://www.geoconsul.gov.ge/en/shorttermvisa_en.html):

General Requirement:

One of the following documents should be presented to the Embassy to verify accommodation for the short-term visits:

  • Document issued by a physical person (individual entrepreneur) or a legal entity registered in Georgia verifying that a person provides accommodation to an alien. The document should indicate the place of accommodation and the duration of stay - in a material form;
  • Document verifying accommodation reservation (hotel booking and other) - in a material form;
  • Notarized invitation of an inviting person verifying alien's accommodation;

To certify sufficient funds for travel for the short term visit one of the following documents should be presented:

  • Notarized invitation certifying that an inviting person provides an alien with the sufficient funds to travel;
  • Document verifying that an alien will personally cover travel expenses - bank statement of an alien within last 6 months, salary verification letter, other document verifying that an alien has sufficient funds to travel to Georgia;
  • Letter of a sponsor - in a material form;
  • Document verifying obtaining grant/tuition, scholarship.
  • Any other document verifying financing - in a material form;

For guaranteeing return for the short-term visits one of the following documents should be presented:

  • Purchased return ticket or the similar reservation;
  • Document verifying employment in the residence country and letter of employment indicating salary;
  • Document verifying studying in the residence country (pupil, student, etc.);
  • Any other document verifying that an alien is integrated in the residence country (proof of family relationship - having family members in the residence country, professional status, etc. Document verifying title over the real property;

If necessary, the Embassy is authorized to request additional documents.

Specific Requirements by Visa Categories:

For state, official, business and unofficial visits

  • Document issued by Georgia or a state authority of the relevant country verifying that an alien is arriving in Georgia on state, official or business visit.
  • A document issued by Georgia or a relevant country verifying that an alien is the member of the official delegation travelling to Georgia on an official visit;
  • Document issued by the state authority of Georgia verifying that an alien is travelling to Georgia with a specific mission of state importance;
  • In case of a friendly or an unofficial visit, any other document verifying purpose of the visit may be submitted.

For Business Visits

  • Document verifying labor relationship (commercial, professional) between an alien/his/her employer, a physical entity residing in Georgia, and a legal entity registered in Georgia. In case of labor relationship between an alien's employer and a physical entity residing in Georgia or a legal entity registered in Georgia, a document verifying labor relationship between an alien and relevant foreign organization should be submitted.

For Private Visits:

Visit for the medical purposes:

  • Document issued by a medical institution verifying the necessity of undergoing medical treatment in the relevant hospital and/or commitment of an institution to carry out medical procedures for an alien. The document should also indicate the necessity of the presence of an accompanying person (if applicable) and the total amount of the treatment.

Visit for the Purpose of Visiting Graves of Relatives and friends:

  • Document verifying the existence of an alien's relatives or friends grave;
  • Document verifying relationship between an alien and a deceased person.

Visit for undertaking scientific, sport, cultural or educational mission and/or attending scientific, sport, cultural or educational conventions/conferences:

  • Document verifying holding scientific, scientific-research, pedagogic, cultural or sport conventions/conferences and participation of an alien is such activity (with a status of a participant, guest or other); The document should include name of the host organization, duration of stay and the purpose of the visit;
  • Document issued by Georgia or any other relevant country verifying that an alien is travelling on the scientific, sport, cultural or educational mission;
  • Document issued by the Georgian National Sport Federation or the National Olympic Committee verifying the sport events and the participation of an alien is such activity (with a status of a participant, guest or other), or the fact of alien's travel to Georgia with a sport mission;

For the journalists travelling to Georgia to engage in their profession:

  • Document issued by professional organization or employer verifying the a person is engaged in the journalistic profession in a foreign country or a person accompanying him/her participates/assists him/her in the journalistic activities;
  • Document verifying that the purpose of the trip is to engage in the journalistic profession or provide assistance in the similar type of work;
  • Document certifying right to conduct journalistic activities in Georgia (journalist's accreditation document and other).

Visit of crew members of a sea vessel in the Georgian harbor:

  • Document verifying that a person is a crew member of a sea vessel in the Georgian harbor (Sailors License);

For the visit of freelancers:

  • Document verifying that an alien will undertake professional services in Georgia and document/information verifying that an alien undertakes similar type of activity;
  • Document verifying having free profession (certificate and other).

In case of issuing visa for the trustee or a guardian of the Georgian citizen, for a person under the trusteeship or guardianship of the Georgian citizen:

  • Document certifying trusteeship or guardianship.

For the visits undertaken for religious worship or establishing religious contacts:

  • List of the sacred places to be visited in Georgia and the itinerary of visit;
  • Document verifying contact with the religious organizations in Georgia (correspondence and other).

For the drivers engaged in international cargo and passenger transportation service on the territory of Georgia:

  • Permission granting foreign driver right to transfer cargo and transport people.

 

Requirements for the LONG-TERM VISAS (https://www.geoconsul.gov.ge/en/longtermvisa_en.html):

General Requirements:

Accommodation can be verified by presenting one of the following documents:

  • Document issued by a physical person (individual entrepreneur) or a legal entity registered in Georgia verifying that a person provides accommodation to an alien. Place of accommodation of an alien and the duration of stay should be indicated in the document;
  • Document verifying accommodation reservation (hotel reservation, etc.)

One of the following documents should be submitted to verify possessing of sufficient funds for travel throughout the travel period:

  • Document verifying that an alien will personally cover travel expenses - bank statement of an alien within last 6 months, salary verification letter, other document verifying that an alien has sufficient funds to travel to Georgia;
  • Letter of a sponsor ;
  • Document verifying receiving grant/tuition, scholarship;
  • Other document verifying finances;
  • Document evidencing the payment of tuition fees;

If necessary, the Embassy is authorized to request additional documents.

Specific Requirements by Visa Categories:

For employees of diplomatic and equivalent missions accredited to Georgia, as well as for consular officials, for employees of representation offices of international organisations located in Georgia and their family members: (documents necessary for obtaining Diplomatic or Special visa may be submitted to the visa issuing authority in an electronic and tangible form by presenting them directly to the issuing authority or by registered mail)

  • Written letter of a relevant country's Foreign Affairs, Diplomatic Mission, Consulate or the organization whose employees are having diplomatic or special/equivalent status;
  • If an alien obtains a visa as a family member, the document verifying ties of relationship; (Birth certificate, Marriage certificate and etc.)

For Labor relationship:

  • Document issued by the Georgian state authorities, physical person (individual entrepreneur) or legal entity registered in Georgia verifying that a person shall undertake labor relationship in Georgia. The document shall contain the tentative duration of the labor contract and the amount of remuneration or information about other types of income.
  • Document issued by the relevant foreign institution verifying that an alien is employed in the institution and required business trip to Georgia;
  • Relevant labor contract containing information about the duration of the contract with the alien and the amount of remuneration or other types of income.

For engaging in entrepreneurial activities:

  • Extract from the public registry verifying that an alien is a founder/cofounder or a legal representative of an entrepreneurial (commercial) legal entity registered in Georgia.

For the Educational Visits:

  • Document verifying admission in the authorized education institution;
  • Document issued by the authorized educational institution (letter, student ID, etc.) verifying that an alien studies on the educational program of the mentioned educational institution (educational course, exchange program, undertaking research, language courses, qualification courses, etc.);
  • Document verifying the existence of the proper foreign language courses in the authorized education institution.

For the family reunion:

  • Document verifying ties of relationship;
  • Document verifying that an alien's family member legally resides in Georgia (except alien's family member resides in Georgia on the basis of visa).

 

The citizens of the member states of the European Union can enter Georgia on the basis of the travel document as well as the Identity Card issued by the EU member states.

Exemptions from Georgian visa obligations also apply to:

Compatriots residing abroad, who are citizens of the country whose citizens need a visa for entering Georgia, are authorized to cross the state border of Georgia without a visa and stay in Georgia for no more than 30 days;

Foreign nationals who are holders of the UNO's or its specialized agencies travel documents (Laissez-Passer), can enter or stay on the territory of Georgia without visa up to 90 days in any 180-days period;

Aliens holding a Georgian residence permit or a temporary residence permit of a refugee or a person with humanitarian status for the entire period of the above mentioned documents validity.

Following individuals do not require a visa for transit movement in Georgia:

Members of a crew of an international airline, railway, or marine transport and passengers that need an interim change of carrier or means of transport and have a document evidencing the right to enter their country of destination. Period of stay in Georgia does not exceed five days.
